There is 5% tax levied on every hotel room; VAT and service charges also included.

Standard fares depend on zones and time of travel.

  • If you want to travel by a taxi, a 20 min tour costs around $30-$40 plus a tip up to 10-15%. Seattle taxi drivers are quite polite and reliable, although you may have to wait up to 20 minutes for a cab. You can also hire a car or a bike to get around in the city. Bus and other tours are also available. Rented cars are easily available but make sure you leave no objects in the car to prevent robbery.

  • Seattle is a relatively safe city with a low crime rate. Pickpockets are often attracted to crowded places. They often work in teams of two or three; one may create a distraction while the other one lifts your wallet. If you need any assistance, ask a police officer. You will see Seattle Police Department officers in their dark-and-pale blue uniforms on car, foot, bicycle and even horseback around town and in the downtown area of Seattle.

  • Preferably, stay away from White Center, Skyway, Seatac, Block 8 of Southend and Yesler . These are considered as risky areas in Seattle. Otherwise, Seattle is quite safe and walkable even during the night.

  • Driving in Seattle is not much difficult as Seattle driving conditions are excellent and motorists are extremely law abiding. However, visitors should be aware of the specially designated lanes for buses, cars and bicycles.

  • Parking in Seattle costs around $3 for two hours, although weekend parking costs approximately $5 for the entire day. On-street parking varies as per the neighborhood. You can also buy a CityPark token worth $1 with purchases of $20 tokens and over. These tokens are redeemable at CityPark lots and garages.

  • Seattle is far-famed for its fashion trends and if you’re interested in fancy boutiques, handcrafted material, jewellery, art and antiques, Pioneer Square is a right destination for you. Shopping hours begin from 09.30 to18.00 on average, including Sundays. Sales tax in Seattle is 8.8% on non-food items. Unlike in other states, visitors are unable to claim tax refunds on goods purchased in Seattle.

  • Seattle has variety of restaurants that offer diverse cuisine matching to your taste and budget. Restaurant meals are subject to state sales tax of 8.8%, which will be added to the bill at the end. When the service charge (15 to 20%) is not added to the bill, a tip of 15 to 20% is expected. For parties of six or more, most restaurants automatically include the service charge with the bill.

  •   Seattle is popular for sensational nightlife as it holds majority of young population. It is prudent to carry a photo identity while visiting any local bar, lounge or club as the minimum drinking age in Seattle is 21.

  •  Seattle hosts many cultural events and activities. The Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet and The Seattle Symphony Orchestra play at various centers in Seattle.

  •  Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying costly gadgets. Be careful with your luggage and belongings. Avoid leaving any valuables in the hotel room and make sure you lock the room well.

  • Call 911 in case of any emergency.

United Kingdom is considered one of the best international destination for higher education. It offers a perfect mix of good institutions, courses and affordable fees. UK also ranks as one of the most preferred study destination by Indians as the Indian curriculum matches that of the British to a great extent. Hence, Indian students face less adaptability problems while studying in UK University.

When it comes to health care, it is often believed that the NHS services offered in UK is enough and no student medical insurance is required. Agreed that it is not mandatory to have one in UK, but it definitely is important to have one. Why? Simply because the NHS is not a free medical service; charges are made for certain things so you should not assume that all treatments will be free. Generally, as an International Student studying on a course in the UK for more than six months, you are entitled to the same treatment as UK citizens.

None the less, you do require to compliment your NHS cover with a comprehensive Student Medical policy that  cover medical costs if you fall ill, and also to cover the additional possible costs resulting from illness. These can be substantial, and include things like study interruption, compassionate visit, medical evacuation and repatriation of remains.

ICICI Lombard GIC covers all these and more at most nominal prices. Apart form medical benefits, we also provide 8 non medical covers. You can buy online with us instantly without any paperwork and get insurance in just a few minutes..

Here are a few reasons on why you need to complement your NHS cover with ICICI Lombard Student Medical Insurance

Part time jobs are a part of the parcel of studying abroad. Almost everyone indulges into working a few hours after classes to earn an extra income. Apart from money, it is also a great way of getting exposure and experience and polishing your skills. If your work is interactive, it also helps your social life by allowing you to meet new people and making new friends. But there are certain aspects to need to be careful about.

  •  Before joining in, figure out your actual income by subtracting your total expenses (travel costs, wardrobe, etc.) from your total projected earnings, and then divide by the number of hours you will work.
  •  Apply for a part-time job early, before the start-of-school rush.
  •  Make sure that your employer is ready to be flexible with your class and exam schedule.
  •  Look for jobs that allow you to study while you work. If you can get two hours of studying done while working four hours, that’s similar to increasing your wage by 50 percent.
  •  If you have a summer or part-time job with a large company in your hometown, see if there’s an opening with the same company in the city where you’ll be going to school.
  •  Deposit all your tips in the bank as soon as you get them. It will spare you the temptation of spending the money and enable you to earn certain interest later.
  •  Ask if your employer will automatically deposit your pay to your bank account, which allows your money to start accumulating interest right from payday, and will help you to avoid bouncing cheques.
  •  If you are working part time, always keep an eye out for a better job. Becoming settled in a part-time job can sometimes be hazardous to your wealth.
  •  Watch for changes in your employer’s financial situation. If the company falls on rough times, you want to avoid being stuck with un cashable pay cheques.

All you need to know about IELTS

Add to : Add to diggAdd to StumbleUpon Add to Onlywire

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English proficiency test for non-native English speaker’s ability of listening, reading, writing and speaking the language. While IELTS is mandatory for study in Australia (TOEFL scores are not accepted), universities in Canada, U.K, New Zealand and even U.S.A. accept IELTS scores.

Over 6,000 education institutes, government agencies, professional organizations and faculties accept IELTS score as a yardstick to measure a candidate’s command over English. Of these over 1,800 are U.S. professional organizations, education institutions and accrediting bodies.

IDP: IELTS Australia, University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and British Council jointly manage the IELTS examination in over 120 countries (more than 500 centers).

The local British Council shall guide you to the nearest IELTS test centers. Tests are usually conducted once a month. The IELTS center shall provide you with an application form and a handbook.

The test scores are available in two weeks time and are valid for 2 years. In case of dissatisfying scores, IELTS can be taken again, but only after 3 months of the first test date.

There are 6 modules to the IELTS examination- Listening, Speaking, Academic Reading, General Training Reading, Academic Writing and General Training Writing. Each year multiple versions are released for the test.

A separate Band Score is received for each of the four sections (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) and the mean is taken for the Overall Band Score. The minimum score requirement (depends upon courses and institutes) ranges between 5.0 to 7.5 out of 9. A band score between 6 and 6.5 are the most common requirements.

Short preparatory courses for the IELTS exam are conducted by the British Council.

The Cambridge IELTS 4 provides excellent preparation material for the IELTS test. The materials are available in the form of Audio CDs, books with answers, authentic test materials to practice techniques and getting familiar with the format etc. There is obviously a price attached to them.

In India, IELTS preparatory classes are held in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Jaipur, Ludhiana,   Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Pune.

You need to take the registration form, passport, letter with roll number and of course stationery for the exam.

Unlike the SAT, no breaks are allowed after completion of a section. Ensure that you have had proper meal and rest to keep you alert for the entire duration. Competitive exams are about time management, so do visit the rest room before the exam and not waste crucial minutes when the test is in progress.

Listening test tips- It is possible that for listening tests a headphone is used. Confirm with the British Council and prepare accordingly. You also must practice the listening tests in the Cambridge IELTS 3 book for greater familiarization. The listening sections comprises of dialogues or monologues. There are 40 questions to be answered in 30 minutes. Dialogues require utmost concentration as  the conversation tends to be faster. Listen carefully to the answering instructions and follow them.

Reading- considered by many as the most difficult section. There are 3 long multi-paragraphed sections and 40 questions to be answered. The key to crack this section is improving your speed and reading skills. It is not your comprehension of the passage, but the ability to derive relevant information, that is tested here.  Preferably go through the questions before (to know the information required) and mark the relevant lines as you read the passage. If you can’t get an answer, move on and come back later. Do not waste time.

Writing- During practice do actually write out tasks 1 and 2. Task 1 usually requires you to describe a table/diagram/graph in minimum 150 words. Do not use less than 150 words as marks are deducted. Task 2 requires you to present an argument. Read lots of editorials, analysis etc. to develop ideas. Do present your stand- agree/disagree, arguments in support of your views and arguments for your disagreement. Task 2 is more important and carries more marks. Ideally spend 40 minutes on task 2 and 20 minutes on task 1. Preferably attempt task 2 first than task 1.

Speaking- First and foremost speak only in English to improve your diction, vocabulary, fluency, grammar and thought process. You will be marked on these aspects. The speaking test is 3 parts- an introduction of examiner and yourself, in second section, you are given a topic to speak for 2 minutes. One minute is provided to go through the passage. Read the questions carefully, gather thoughts about the topic and speak about the answers sought. The examiner may ask a few questions once you have finished the 2 minutes. The last section will be a discussion based on your answers in section 2.

In India, the IELTS Test Centers are in Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bangalore, Baroda, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Jamshedpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kottayam, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi, Patiala, Pondicherry, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Rajkot, Siliguri, Surat, Thimpu, Trichur, Trichy, Trivandrum, Vijayawada and Vizag.

GRE – Graduate Record Examination tests

Here is all the important information you need to know about GRE

  • GRE or Graduate Record Examination tests the verbal and mathematical reasoning, analytical writing and critical reasoning skills. Over 2,300 universities (for fields other than business) in U.S.A require GRE scores as an eligibility criterion for admission into Graduate programs.
  • Subject-specific theoretical study is not required in General GRE test. It is required for GRE Subject test that evaluates candidate’s undergraduate achievements in 8 specific study fields.
  • The GRE is administered and conducted by US based Educational Testing Service. In India, the GRE is held at 9 cities- Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Hyderabad and Trivandrum.
  • A high GRE score does not guarantee admission into a good graduate school, but it is definitely a consideration. The GRE test is computer-based and the score is reported on a scale of 200-800 (in 10-point increments) in verbal reasoning and quantitative sections. The analytical writing section is marked separately on a scale of 0-6.
  • The analytical writing section tests a candidate’s critical thinking capabilities. The two distinct tasks here are to a) present one’s perspective (45 mins) and b) to analyze an argument (30 mins). The analytical writing section is always the first one in the exam. The verbal section (30 minutes) consists of 30 questions on analogies, reading comprehension, antonyms and sentence completion. The quantitative section (45 minutes) has 28 questions and tests mathematical skills/ concepts of high-school level.  A verbal or quantitative experimental section may be included in the test. These sections may appear in random order.
  • Do keep in mind that for both essays in “analytical writing” section, the emphasis should be on analysis and not writing. It means that language may be simple, but, you must be clear and concise about your arguments and perspectives. Essays on high writing skills will not fetch better marks if your reasoning is not crisp.
  • The quantitative section topics include Algebra (including Quadratic Equations), Percentages, Fractions and Decimals, Ratio and Proportions, Area and Volume (2 and 3 dimensional figures included), Probability, Geometry (include Coordinate Geometry), Number Systems and the like.
  • The GRE tests are held throughout the year. You can opt for your own date. September to December  is the peak season for GRE. If you intend to give the exam during this time, register at least 90 days in advance.
  • You may make GRE registrations online, over the phone/fax and through a mail or courier. In case you are registering by mail, then send completed forms and draft (to appropriate regional registration center) at least three weeks in advance of your first choice date. Confirmation number and details would be either faxed or mailed to you. If you do not receive the details, intimate the regional registration center at least 3 business days before your scheduled test.
  • The fees for GRE is $170 (excluding taxes) to be paid at the time of registration. Other fees such as rescheduling ($50) or late registration ($25) etc. are separate. You may pay through a globally accepted credit card (Visa, Master, Amex. Discover or JCB) or money order/voucher/certified checks. Checks etc. must be in the name of ETS-GRE. It must have a preprinted check number, payee’s name and address and must not be over 90 days old.
  • ETS reports your scores to four universities of your choice (cost included in the fees) and any additional university costs $15 each(maximum 8). You must name these universities before leaving the test center (after the exam). You can view the unofficial quantitative and verbal reasoning scores after the examination and decide accordingly. The official scores, including Analytical Writing scores will be mailed after 10-14 days of taking the GRE exam. You may receive the scores by phone ($12).
  • Any person is eligible to take the GRE exam and the scores are valid for 5 years. GRE test can be taken only once a month and a maximum of 5 times in a year. This rule applies even if you get the GRE scores canceled. Unless you have scored very low marks (due to illness or other reasons) or considerably less than your usual practice tests scores, it is advisable not to take GRE tests again.
  • GRE Subject test is generally required by universities for Doctoral study, supplement undergraduate records and even for Masters level programs. It tests a candidate’s qualification for a specif field of specialization. The test may be taken for 8 different subjects- Chemistry,  Biology, Biochemistry/Cell and Molecular Biology, Mathematics, Physics,  Psychology, Computer Science and English Literature.
  • Unlike the GRE General test, the GRE Subject is a written exam and held thrice a year in October, November and April.

Financial Aid for students planning to study abroad

June 4, 2008 by devanshik

Add to : Add to digg Add to StumbleUpon Add to Onlywire

For students going abroad for higher studies, it is imperative to provide proof of sufficient funds (atleast for first year expenses). Mostly all universities require sufficient proof of financial aid for meeting expenses such as application cost , tuition fees, accommodation and living, health insurance, transportation etc. Therefore unless financial aid can be arranged , studying abroad may not be possible at all.

If you are an Indian student planning to go abroad for education, you can consider the various sources for financail aid apart from your/parents’ savings. A main options are as follows -

Bank Loans
Various banks such as Bank of India, Andhra Bank, Canara Bank, State Bank of India, Axis Bank, HSBC Bank, Indian Bank etc. provide education loans for studying abroad.

Depending upon the loan amount, certain percentage of security (such as  NSE shares, house mortgage etc.) is required and interest is charged accordingly. Recently, most banks usually do not ask for security or collateral for a loan up to Rs. 4 lacs. The interest rates would generally not exceed the Prime Lending Rates (PLR). Certain banks also accept a third party guarantee instead of security. (But this is  usually for loans between 4 lacs and 7.5 lacs).

To avail of bank loans, the canadidate needs to fulfil certain conditions such as he must be an Indian resident, confirmation of admission and requirement of minimum annual income.  The repayment of loan generally starts after six months of course completion or one-month of job (if employed immediately after course completion) and the entire amount has to be repaid in 5 to 7 years (from the first payment).

Trust Loans
Trust Loans are either free or charge a lower interest rate (2 to 4 %). The loan amount is variable and is usually up to Rs. 1.5 lacs. However, they generally have a deadline by which you must submit the loan application forms. Few of the well known trusts are- J.N. Tata Endowment (soft loans between Rs. 50,000 and Rs.1.5 lacs), Sahu Jain Trust, Mariwala Trust, K.C. Mahindra Education Trust and R.D. Sethna Scholarship Fund.

Fellowships
Fellowships are comapritively difficult to acquire due to stiff competition. The popular ones are- Inlaks Scholarships, Aga Khan Foundation, Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships and AT & T Leadership Awards (only for U.S.).

Apart from these, you can also acquire financial assistance abroad by way of  University Fundings – Scholarship/Fellowships/Assistantships, U.S. Banks Student Loans (for US) and other sources.

One must remember that most universities provide financial aid to overseas students on merit and not on need. It is easier to avail monetary assistance for graduate programs than undergraduate courses. The aid amount varies for different universities and fields of specialization. Also note that it  is easier to receive financial assistance from U.S. and U.K. universities than those in Australia, New Zealand or Canada.

In case of undergraduates, Aid forms from the institute as well as the Foreign Student’s Financial Aid Form has to be submitted along with a bank statement. Forms may ask details about your personal and total (family) annual income, average living expenses, asset details etc.

Postgraduate students must mention about financial aid requirement in their application forms. Meritorious students receive financial assistance most commonly in the form of tuition waivers, scholarship or fellowship and assistantships (a cash stipend to take care of their expenses and in return they work for certain hours a week- either teaching or research based).

Please note that Indians usually are able to manage some funding after one or two semesters.

A U.S. Bank loan is among the best alternatives for MBA students. When applying for bank loans in US, a co-signer (US citizen or permanent resident) is required. However, several banks will waiver the co-signer requirement. The relevant information will be available on the university website.

Ensure that you go thorgh the univrsity information thoroughly and understand the terms and conditions properly.

Going abroad for studies? Buy medical insurance first

June 4, 2008 by devanshik

Add to : Add to digg Add to StumbleUpon Add to Onlywire

If you are an Indian student going abroad for your studies, you definitely know the importance of health insurance.  Student Medical Insurance is mandatory for all the universities worldwide, especially when you are an international student.

But the question is, whether you should buy it from your home country, or from the university itself? All universities offer a medical plan for their students. However, they also waive it if the international student could get any other insurance policy meeting its requirements.

Should you buy your student insurance from India itself?
Actually, it does make sense when you buy insurance from India for a simple fact that it falls cheaper. Buying insurance in Indian rupees costs you approximately 1/3rd of buying in U.S. dollars. You can choose an insurance policy that is university complaint and thus get the same benefits at a much lower price.

Students from developing countries, like India, have to face the consequences of the unfavorable exchange rate. As a result, sustaining themselves abroad in more developed countries, such as US, UK, Australia etc, falls more expensive on their pockets. It is a well known fact that medical services are quite expensive in most countries abroad.

Moreover, most universities offer just the medical cover. But as you are staying in a  completely different country all alone, it is wise to get covered for other non-medical risks also. These may include personal liability, luggage damage, passport loss, bail bond,  Study interruption, Repatriation of remains, Sponsor protection etc.

Here are a certain things you need to keep in mind while buying your Student Health Insurance from India -

Consider the cost factor but prioritize coverage over costs.
We know that buying form India falls cheaper. But do evaluate the domestic options available. However, do not let cost take priority over coverage. Be smart when evaluating various options. Do not go in for an insurance company only because it has the lowest premium! Also consider the coverages offered to you. You might as well choose a company with a higher premium but with better covers.

Ensure it is University Compliant.
Your University would give you a waiver only if the insurance policy is compliant with the university’s requirements. So be sure that all your insurance needs are compiled with.

Protect yourself against non medical risks also
As mentioned before, most universities may require only medical coverage. But you should get covered for other non-medical risks also, as even if they are not mandatory, they are extremely important.

Always check out the third party tie-ups
You do not ant to be stuck in a claim. To ensue a smooth claim in future, always check the Third Party Administrator tie up of the company you are buying insurance from. Check the hospital network of the area/ country you are going for studies.

Buy online
Always prefer buying your insurance online. It is not only convenient but is faster and safer. While buying it online, you are not dependent on anybody else and can check all the facts for yourself. Thus chances of frauds are less. Also, when you buy online, the digitally signed policy generated  is a legal document and can be accessible online anytime, anywhere in the world.

Click here to buy Student Medical Insurance from ICICI Lombard GIC. We have taken into account all the above points and created various plans that cover much more than medical risks. Choose from various plans to suit your needs.  ICICI Lombard’s Student Health plans are compliant with more than 500 universities worldwide.  Check your university requirement and buy online instantly.

Important HousingTips

Usually the universities offer on campus accommodation. But if you choose to rent a place of your own, you need to be attentive and alert to avoid any problems later. Here are a few points you should keep in mind.

  •  Know what you are signing. Be sure the contract clearly states, in writing, exactly how much rent you must pay and who is responsible for paying the other expenses (water, cable, heating, etc.). Don’t assume the landlord will pay for something just because it isn’t mentioned in the lease.
  •  If your landlord promises to fix something or renovate your new place prior to you moving in, have it in writing before you sign the lease.
  •  Make sure all occupants’ names and signatures are on the lease (no matter how well you know your roommates). If not, any damage charges have to be paid by the person who signed the lease. If you’re the only one, you alone may be liable to pay all charges.
  •  Make sure you inspect the premises and fill out a damage report prior to moving in. Otherwise, your landlord may try to blame you for the missing or damaged items.
  •  When disputes arise, seek the free advice offered by many college and university services for resolving such matters. Some campuses have housing mediators who provide advice and outline the options open to you, while sparing you the expense and time of taking legal action. Other campuses have law students or legal aid professionals who can advise you on housing matters and disputes.
  •  Remember to give proper written notice prior leaving. The amount of advance notice required by law varies from country to country. Don’t assume that just because your lease is up you don’t have to give notice. Many students have been stuck having to pay one or two months’ extra rent or more because they neglected this detail.

  • GMAT is a computer-adaptive exam, in which questions appear one at a time. Most are multiple choice questions. Be extremely careful as you can neither skip a question (next question will appear only when you have answered the current one) nor change answer for any attempted question. Based on your answer, the computer adapts and poses appropriate difficulty level question. The first question is always of medium difficulty.
  • The GMAT starts with a Computer tutorial to acclimatize you with the infrastructure. This is followed by Analysis of an issue and Analysis of an argument (30 minutes each), an optional break of 10 minutes followed by a 37-question Quantitative section (75 minutes). You may either take a 10-minute break again or proceed to the Verbal section. This section has 41 questions to be answered in 75 minutes.

There are four different scores to GMAT. They are a) total score (combination of Verbal and Quantitative score) scaled between 200 and 800, b) a separate Verbal score (0-60), c) separate Quantitative score (0-60) and d) Analytical Writing score (0-6). The first three scores can be known immediately after the test. The official score card will include an independent Analytical Writing Score and is available approximately after 3 weeks.

Your GMAT scores will be reported to 5 schools of your choice (cost included in fees). This list of schools has to be furnished before the test is take. Therefore, prioritize your application on the basis of scores you expect to achieve. Any additional recipient costs $28 each.

Apart from your scores, the card will contain a percents (%) below, up to 5 years’ scores (if any) and background information. The % below suggests the percentage of candidates who scored below you (total GMAT takers for the recent most 3-years).

GMAT test can be taken only once a month and a maximum of 5 times in a year. In case you score a 800, you are prohibited to take the exam for 5 years (from your exam date).
