As an initiative to help the growing number of students going overseas for higher studies, ICICI Lombard held a Webinar to empower them with handy tips on overcoming the challenges of studying abroad. This Webinar targeted students who had already secured their admission and completed their post-visa formalities.

Key Pointers:

Research is very important:
Right from hailing a cab to crossing the street, everything is going to be different, so study the place well. Learn the laws and ways of the land.

Use the internet :
The internet can be your greatest resource for researching your new home while you study, use it to its full potential.

Airfare and offers:
When students and studying is concerned, chances are you can avail discounts on your travel. Find out which Airlines are offering you the best package.

Health insurance:
Most universities offer insurance coverages that take care of hospitalisation expenses due to medical emergencies. You have a choice to buy the insurance either from the university, a recognised healthcare provider within that country, or comparable insurance from India.

Stay in touch:
Make provisions for getting in touch with your family back in India, as soon as you land. Remember, they will be anxious to hear about your safe travel.

Essentials and Non-essentials:
Do not carry grains and pulses from India. Carry voltage converters for compatibility with your electrical appliances.

Medication:
Even basic medicines might be expensive there, so carry what you can from here, but make sure you do so as per the permitted amount and only in sealed packs. Also, check that they do not fall in the banned category list. Make sure you carry your prescriptions, as medicines are not sold over the counter without them. Keep the prescriptions handy as you might be required to produce it in the security checks at the airport.

Top Questions at the Webinar:

INSURANCE

Why should you opt for insurance from India?
It is cheaper to buy it here, as you pay for it in rupees but get covered in dollars. Insurance bought in India is available at a fraction of the cost of similar insurance bought abroad. Coverage begins the minute you enter the airport for leaving to your university.

What does Student Medical Insurance cover?
It covers Medical emergencies that require hospitalisation or a visit to the general physician.

How is ICICI Lombard Student Insurance better?
Our student insurance covers both medical and non-medical emergencies, including loss of baggage/ passport loss/sponsor protection. It also covers study interruption in case the student misses a semester on medical grounds and takes care of the medical bills and the tuition fee for that semester. The policy can easily be extended online, as and when required.

How do you file a claim with ICICI Lombard?
We have tie-up with leading healthcare providers globally and we offer cashless hospitalisation worldwide. All a student has to do is call the toll free number to register the claim and get information on the nearest hospital. Even the parents in India can file a claim on behalf of the students.

How can you check the university requirement for health insurance?
You can either search for your university requirements on www.icicilombard.com or call our Toll-free helpline 1800-209-8888 for assistance. We have at a our disposal a University Tracker that features over 500 universities, which let you identify the health insurance requirements for studying there. In case, you are unable to locate a particular college, you can even add it to our database, by sending in a request.

TRAVEL

Are there any student specific travel offers?
Jet Airways has a special package for students called the Edujetter, which consists of an air ticket, travel insurance, a calling card and special allowance for excess baggage. The baggage exemptions allow students to carry up to 50-60 kgs for the US, up to 50 kgs for EU, and up to 30 kgs for the Far East. In addition, by means of a tie-up with FedEx, students can courier forgotten documents or note books at a discounted rate, from India to their university.

COMMUNICATION

Why should you opt for a Matrix Calling Card from India?
The first thing you want to do after you land is inform your family back home of your safe arrival. Without a calling card at your disposal, you would have to depend on airport facilities, or searching for an ISD booth yourself. Also, since making international calls is expensive, when you opt for a Matrix Calling Card, the parents can pay the bills from India and even set a bill limit.

What should you keep in mind when communicating back home and locally?
Students should not only compare rates for calling back home, but also for making local calls. While calling home may be a priority in the first few months since you might feel home sick, later on your focus might change on making more calls to your friends on campus. So, look for a plan that is flexible and customizable accordingly.

How viable is the Matrix Calling Card compared to other internet alternatives?
First, to use the internet you would require a PC and an internet connection. Secondly, most universities do not allow VoIP on their network, and might ban or fine you if caught doing so.

GENERAL TALK

What should you do before you land?
Check for different modes of transport from the airport to the university. Pre-arrange for an airport pick-up. Find out more about the city where you are going to study.

How much cash should you carry?
Be prepared for major expenses in the first month, as this is the time when you will have to shell out for an accommodation deposit, a laptop and other stuff to settle in. Carry 3-4 months living-cost in cash. Avoid carrying lots of cash and big denominations, as they are harder to break for change.

How should you plan your expenses?
Take advantage of student discounts there by checking student boards and forums. Opening a bank account can be a long procedure, so opt for a Travel / Cash Card, which works just like a prepaid credit card. Alternatively, you can carry an activated international debit card from India.

Should I buy clothing from India?
Avoid carrying too many clothes and woollens from India as the fashion and weather is different. Besides, they will just add to your weight and you might end up paying for excess baggage.

What can I do to blend in?
Speak in English, as it is a universally accepted language. Use this opportunity to make friends and learn about different cultures. Try to be punctual always, as unlike India it is considered rude to be late even by a few minutes. Remember to be courteous, polite and well mannered.

Observing the latest trends in insurance, your health comes first in the list. Health insurance figures as the topmost priority for any individual, irrespective of age, in current times. Venturing out into a competitive world itself creates a hazardous situation where anything can happen to you any moment. While natural calamities and accidents are unforeseen events, avoidance of minor and major illnesses can be achieved through the concept of healthy living.

Yet, increasing pollution and environmental hazards has turned the tide for individuals who are extremely conscious about their health and who opt for preventive measures. Particularly the student community who faces stiff competition and has to deal with loads of pressure almost every second day, are at a much greater risk of falling into the trap of serious illnesses. Everyone around, particularly parents of children, who encourage a child’s competitive streak and ambition to do well in life, agree to send them abroad for higher studies, yet suffer from anxiety and apprehension, regarding their child’s physical and mental well-being. We at ICICI Lombard understand their concern and offer to provide effective solutions to secure their child’s welfare requirements, taking a step forward to insure their health.

While, having faith and a positive outlook keeps you from becoming unnecessarily apprehensive about untoward incidents like loss of baggage or passport, medical emergencies, and other unforeseen emergencies, being cautious and taking preventive measures is only a sign of being sensible and not taking risks while traveling across to a foreign country.

Students/Visitors from any other country apart from the European countries need to fulfill the passport requirements while entering in Germany. European Nationals except Bulgaria and Romania, holding a valid national ID card do not need passport. Citizens from Bulgaria and Romania are advised to contact the embassy to check visa requirements.

All visitors must have valid passports (needs to be valid for 3 months beyond the departure date). Australian, Canadian and U.S. nationals do not require a visa for a less than 3-months visit. EU countries’ visitors must have a valid national ID, which could either be a passport or some other ID. EU countries’ visitors do not require a visa at all.

Weather

Best time to visit Germany is from May to October. Coastal Germany has temperate climate with warm summers and mild cloudy winters. The interiors are warmer during summers and winters are colder. Expect rain throughout the year. Carry clothing accordingly and do not forget an umbrella.

Finance

In Germany, it is advised that you change currencies only at the banks or legitimate exchange bureau. Although banks are shut on weekends, exchange bureaus at the airport and main stations remain open everyday between 6:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M.

Finance

Cash your traveler’s checks at exchange bureaus as banks would seldom accept it. Although Germans prefer cash transactions, nowadays major credit cards are being widely accepted. Probably the most convenient and quickest way to obtain cash would be at an ATM.

Culture

In Germany, unless asked, do not address people by their first names. Also take a small gift such as unwrapped flowers or a bottle of champagnefor the hostess. Make sure that you take uneven number of flowers and that they are not red roses. Courtesy states that on entering stores or restaurant use greeting such as Guten Tag before asking for anything. Also do not offend the Germans by just leaving without saying anything. The phrase to be used here is Auf Wiedersehen or Tschuss. Normally, casual dressing is acceptable, but in theaters, opera, certain restaurants, casinos and important social functions one must be appropriately dressed. Smoking is banned wherever notified, public transports and buildings. Restaurants and bars are exempted.

Routine Life (Rules and Regulations)

Shops generally remain open between 10:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M.- Monday to Saturday. The bigger stores, departmentals and supermarkets may remain open till 8:00 P.M. Countryside stores close by 6:00 P.M. and usually shut down for an hour in the afternoon. If the service charge is not added to the bill leave a 5 to 10 per cent tip on the check amount. Also tip the cleaning staff, hairdressers, porters and taxi drivers in small amounts.

Public toilets are easily available in Germany. They are marked as Toilette or WC. Larger cities would have spherically shaped or automatic cubic “boxes.” These toilets operate on coins of up to 50 Eurocents or even 1 Euro. Therefore keep some change handy. Also at several of these washrooms you will find attendants. Do leave small tip for them. Choose the correct toilet. ‘Manner’ is for men whereas women’s toilet would have ‘Damen’ or ‘Frauen’ sign boards.

Driving

Non-EU visitors require an international driving license or an official German translation.

In order to hire a car you have to be a minimum of 21 years of age and require a valid driver’s license and a major credit card. Germany drives on the right and overtakes on the left. Always.

If there are no signals/traffic police/sign indicating right-of-way, then right-of-way is always valid for traffic coming from right. This is true also for small side streets and main roads intersections.

Driving Rules in Germany

German laws are very strict on drunken driving. Front and rear seat belts are mandatory everywhere. Hand held mobiles while driving are not allowed.

There are no tolls to be paid on the German Autobahns. Radar traps to monitor speeds are frequent in Germany. Maintain speed limits while driving. Within cities the limit is 50 kph and two-lane highways 100 kph. Although most motorways or autobahns do not specify a speed limit, avoid topping over 130 kph.

Insurance

Student medical insurance is a mandatory requirement at most foreign universities. Some universities do provide students with an insurance plan. However, it is recommended that you get a health insurance from your home country and apply for an insurance waiver simply because insurance from the home country is relatively cheaper and provides the same coverage (and sometimes more) at a lower cost. The availability of dozens of insurance providers may baffle you. Nonetheless, you have to be vigilant when it comes to choosing the right student health insurance policy.

Following universities in Germany demand Student Medical/Travel Insurance. Click on the names to know the requirements of these universities:

University of Washington is one of the reputed universities in Seattle. Opt for Student Health Insurance before applying and read on to know more about life in Seattle (Source: www.worldtravelguide.net)

The best time to visit Seattle is the May month of the Summer season. Weather is quite unpleasant otherwise as Seattle is frequently shrouded with gray clouds and fog.

In Seattle, the relatively warmer months are July and August and the coldest month is January with very low temperature levels.

here is a consistent rainfall in the month of October, which makes the atmosphere dull. In December’s torrential rains bring instant chill in Seattle’s weather. If you’re ready to adjust with the moods of Seattle’s weather; you’re welcomed.

While in Seattle, preferably exchange your foreign currencies from the places listed below:

Nothgate Cion Shop – 539, NE Northgate Way, Seattle

Wells FargoBank Na – 1215, 4th Avenue, Seattle

Custom House Global Foreign Exchange – 911, Western Avenue, Seattle

Chartered Forex Inc – 4501 15th Avenue St, Seattle

LBC Mabuhay USA Corporation – 2000, 23rd Avenue St, Seattle

Travelex Currency Services – 400, Pine St, Seattle

Travelex Currency Services – Sea Tac International Airport, Seattle

Seattle is also known as ‘Emerald City’ since it is voted as America’s most youthful and habitable city.

Accommodating oneself is quite easy in Seattle and there is range of accommodation available that suit to every kind of budget. Usually, the Summer season is the peak season and it is prudent to reserve your stay well in advance. Best rates can be found during the low season, which is November to March. There is 5% tax levied on every hotel room; VAT and service charges also included.

Seattle has an outstanding Bus service called Metro Transit that gets you around in just $1.50. There is free transport in the downtown area everyday until 7 PM. In other locations, adult tickets cost more (around $2.50) during peak hours. A day pass for Metro Transit is available on Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Standard fares depend on zones and time of travel.

If you want to travel by a taxi, a 20 min tour costs around $30-$40 plus a tip up to 10-15%. Seattle taxi drivers are quite polite and reliable, although you may have to wait up to 20 minutes for a cab. You can also hire a car or a bike to get around in the city. Bus and other tours are also available. Rented cars are easily available but make sure you leave no objects in the car to prevent robbery.

Seattle is a relatively safe city with a low crime rate. Pickpockets are often attracted to crowded places. They often work in teams of two or three; one may create a distraction while the other one lifts your wallet. If you need any assistance, ask a police officer. You will see Seattle Police Department officers in their dark-and-pale blue uniforms on car, foot, bicycle and even horseback around town and in the downtown area of Seattle.

Preferably, stay away from White Center, Skyway, Seatac, Block 8 of Southend and Yesler . These are considered as risky areas in Seattle. Otherwise, Seattle is quite safe and walkable even during the night.

Driving in Seattle is not much difficult as Seattle driving conditions are excellent and motorists are extremely law abiding. However, visitors should be aware of the specially designated lanes for buses, cars and bicycles.

Parking in Seattle costs around $3 for two hours, although weekend parking costs approximately $5 for the entire day. On-street parking varies as per the neighborhood. You can also buy a CityPark token worth $1 with purchases of $20 tokens and over. These tokens are redeemable at CityPark lots and garages.

Seattle is far-famed for its fashion trends and if you’re interested in fancy boutiques, handcrafted material, jewellery, art and antiques, Pioneer Square is a right destination for you. Shopping hours begin from 09.30 to18.00 on average, including Sundays. Sales tax in Seattle is 8.8% on non-food items. Unlike in other states, visitors are unable to claim tax refunds on goods purchased in Seattle.

Seattle has variety of restaurants that offer diverse cuisine matching to your taste and budget. Restaurant meals are subject to state sales tax of 8.8%, which will be added to the bill at the end. When the service charge (15 to 20%) is not added to the bill, a tip of 15 to 20% is expected. For parties of six or more, most restaurants automatically include the service charge with the bill.

Seattle is popular for sensational nightlife as it holds majority of young population. It is prudent to carry a photo identity while visiting any local bar, lounge or club as the minimum drinking age in Seattle is 21.

Seattle hosts many cultural events and activities. The Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet and The Seattle Symphony Orchestra play at various centers in Seattle.

Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying costly gadgets. Be careful with your luggage and belongings. Avoid leaving any valuables in the hotel room and make sure you lock the room well.

Call 911 in case of any emergency.

United States of America is the top destination for higher education and studies today. With world’s top rated universities, its varied and unconventional courses and specialization, and state-of-the-art training and research facilities, USA is globally recognized for producing the finest intellectuals.

The number of Indians going to United States for higher education is increasing year by year. One of the main aspects of preparing for the academic sojourn is the Student Medical Insurance. And this becomes all the more important when going to USA for a simple fact that health care is very expensive there. Besides, current US laws requires that students should carry at least the most basic international student health insurance with adequate medical coverage.

Although the universities provide health insurance coverage, they also waive it off for an equivalent insurance policy form the home country. The cost of US student health insurance could range anything from $50 to $1,000 per month. Buying insurance from the home country enables one to avail the same coverage at a comparatively low cost.

Student Medical insurance provides medical benefits, that covers medical bills and cost of hospitalization. Besides, the student gets other benefits including emergency medical evacuation and repatriation.

ICICI Lombard GIC offers affordable Student Medical Insurance covering medical and other benefits at a price much less than what the US university provides. When buying from India, the student pays premiums in rupees and is covered in dollars! Apart from medical benefits, we also provide 8 non medical covers. Moreover, you can buy student health insurance online and insure yourselves instantly, without any paperwork.

Here are a few reasons should buy your Student Medical Insurance from ICICI Lombard

The insurance plans are University Compliant
The student plans are tailor made according to the requirement of specific universities. Thus, the policies are university compliant and you can easily get a waiver.
Pay in Indian rupees rather than dollars
When you buy your policy in India, you pay in rupees at 1/3rd of the cost of buying in dollars.

Tie-up with United Health Group
ICICI Lombard has now tied up with United Health Group (UHG), one of the largest health care companies in the US. This tie-up will provides all Indian students access to United Healthcare’s network of hospitals and physicians.

Worldwide Cashless Hospitalization Facility
Avail cashless hospitalization across network hospitals worldwide. This means that you are covered even during your internship program outside USA.

Policy coverage for 2 years
Student Medical Insurance is now available with a continuous cover for 2 years. Now cover your entire period of study and save yourself of policy extension hassles.

The convenience of buying online
You can buy your university compliant insurance plan from www.icicilombard.com online in just a few minutes! With zero paperwork, the online policy is generated instantly and can be accessed online anytime from anywhere in the world. It is a digitally signed and is thus a valid legal document. Not only this, you can also renew it online instantly.

United Kingdom is considered one of the best international destination for higher education. It offers a perfect mix of good institutions, courses and affordable fees. UK also ranks as one of the most preferred study destination by Indians as the Indian curriculum matches that of the British to a great extent. Hence, Indian students face less adaptability problems while studying in UK University.

When it comes to health care, it is often believed that the NHS services offered in UK is enough and no student medical insurance is required. Agreed that it is not mandatory to have one in UK, but it definitely is important to have one. Why? Simply because the NHS is not a free medical service; charges are made for certain things so you should not assume that all treatments will be free.
Part time jobs are a part of the parcel of studying abroad. Almost everyone indulges into working a few hours after classes to earn an extra income. Apart from money, it is also a great way of getting exposure and experience and polishing your skills. If your work is interactive, it also helps your social life by allowing you to meet new people and making new friends. But there are certain aspects to need to be careful about.

Before joining in, figure out your actual income by subtracting your total expenses (travel costs, wardrobe, etc.) from your total projected earnings, and then divide by the number of hours you will work.

Apply for a part-time job early, before the start-of-school rush.

Make sure that your employer is ready to be flexible with your class and exam schedule.

Look for jobs that allow you to study while you work. If you can get two hours of studying done while working four hours, that’s similar to increasing your wage by 50 percent.

If you have a summer or part-time job with a large company in your hometown, see if there’s an opening with the same company in the city where you’ll be going to school.

Deposit all your tips in the bank as soon as you get them. It will spare you the temptation of spending the money and enable you to earn certain interest later.

Ask if your employer will automatically deposit your pay to your bank account, which allows your money to start accumulating interest right from payday, and will help you to avoid bouncing cheques.

If you are working part time, always keep an eye out for a better job. Becoming settled in a part-time job can sometimes be hazardous to your wealth.

Watch for changes in your employer’s financial situation. If the company falls on rough times, you want to avoid being stuck with un cashable pay cheques.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English proficiency test for non-native English speaker’s ability of listening, reading, writing and speaking the language. While IELTS is mandatory for study in Australia (TOEFL scores are not accepted), universities in Canada, U.K, New Zealand and even U.S.A. accept IELTS scores.

Over 6,000 education institutes, government agencies, professional organizations and faculties accept IELTS score as a yardstick to measure a candidate’s command over English. Of these over 1,800 are U.S. professional organizations, education institutions and accrediting bodies.

IDP: IELTS Australia, University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and British Council jointly manage the IELTS examination in over 120 countries (more than 500 centers).

The local British Council shall guide you to the nearest IELTS test centers. Tests are usually conducted once a month. The IELTS center shall provide you with an application form and a handbook.

The test scores are available in two weeks time and are valid for 2 years. In case of dissatisfying scores, IELTS can be taken again, but only after 3 months of the first test date.

There are 6 modules to the IELTS examination- Listening, Speaking, Academic Reading, General Training Reading, Academic Writing and General Training Writing. Each year multiple versions are released for the test.

A separate Band Score is received for each of the four sections (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) and the mean is taken for the Overall Band Score. The minimum score requirement (depends upon courses and institutes) ranges between 5.0 to 7.5 out of 9. A band score between 6 and 6.5 are the most common requirements.

Short preparatory courses for the IELTS exam are conducted by the British Council.

The Cambridge IELTS 4 provides excellent preparation material for the IELTS test. The materials are available in the form of Audio CDs, books with answers, authentic test materials to practice techniques and getting familiar with the format etc. There is obviously a price attached to them.

In India, IELTS preparatory classes are held in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Pune.

You need to take the registration form, passport, letter with roll number and of course stationery for the exam.

Unlike the SAT, no breaks are allowed after completion of a section. Ensure that you have had proper meal and rest to keep you alert for the entire duration. Competitive exams are about time management, so do visit the rest room before the exam and not waste crucial minutes when the test is in progress.

Listening test tips- It is possible that for listening tests a headphone is used. Confirm with the British Council and prepare accordingly. You also must practice the listening tests in the Cambridge IELTS 3 book for greater familiarization. The listening sections comprises of dialogues or monologues. There are 40 questions to be answered in 30 minutes. Dialogues require utmost concentration as the conversation tends to be faster. Listen carefully to the answering instructions and follow them.

Reading- considered by many as the most difficult section. There are 3 long multi-paragraphed sections and 40 questions to be answered. The key to crack this section is improving your speed and reading skills. It is not your comprehension of the passage, but the ability to derive relevant information, that is tested here. Preferably go through the questions before (to know the information required) and mark the relevant lines as you read the passage. If you can’t get an answer, move on and come back later. Do not waste time.

Writing- During practice do actually write out tasks 1 and 2. Task 1 usually requires you to describe a table/diagram/graph in minimum 150 words. Do not use less than 150 words as marks are deducted. Task 2 requires you to present an argument. Read lots of editorials, analysis etc. to develop ideas. Do present your stand- agree/disagree, arguments in support of your views and arguments for your disagreement. Task 2 is more important and carries more marks. Ideally spend 40 minutes on task 2 and 20 minutes on task 1. Preferably attempt task 2 first than task 1.

Speaking- First and foremost speak only in English to improve your diction, vocabulary, fluency, grammar and thought process. You will be marked on these aspects. The speaking test is 3 parts- an introduction of examiner and yourself, in second section, you are given a topic to speak for 2 minutes. One minute is provided to go through the passage. Read the questions carefully, gather thoughts about the topic and speak about the answers sought. The examiner may ask a few questions once you have finished the 2 minutes. The last section will be a discussion based on your answers in section 2.

In India, the IELTS Test Centers are in Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bangalore, Baroda, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Jamshedpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kottayam, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi, Patiala, Pondicherry, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Rajkot, Siliguri, Surat, Thimpu, Trichur, Trichy, Trivandrum, Vijayawada and Vizag.

Here is all the important information you need to know about GRE

GRE or Graduate Record Examination tests the verbal and mathematical reasoning, analytical writing and critical reasoning skills. Over 2,300 universities (for fields other than business) in U.S.A require GRE scores as an eligibility criterion for admission into Graduate programs.

Subject-specific theoretical study is not required in General GRE test. It is required for GRE Subject test that evaluates candidate’s undergraduate achievements in 8 specific study fields.

The GRE is administered and conducted by US based Educational Testing Service. In India, the GRE is held at 9 cities- Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Hyderabad and Trivandrum.

A high GRE score does not guarantee admission into a good graduate school, but it is definitely a consideration. The GRE test is computer-based and the score is reported on a scale of 200-800 (in 10-point increments) in verbal reasoning and quantitative sections. The analytical writing section is marked separately on a scale of 0-6.

The analytical writing section tests a candidate’s critical thinking capabilities. The two distinct tasks here are to a) present one’s perspective (45 mins) and b) to analyze an argument (30 mins). The analytical writing section is always the first one in the exam. The verbal section (30 minutes) consists of 30 questions on analogies, reading comprehension, antonyms and sentence completion. The quantitative section (45 minutes) has 28 questions and tests mathematical skills/ concepts of high-school level. A verbal or quantitative experimental section may be included in the test. These sections may appear in random order.

Do keep in mind that for both essays in “analytical writing” section, the emphasis should be on analysis and not writing. It means that language may be simple, but, you must be clear and concise about your arguments and perspectives. Essays on high writing skills will not fetch better marks if your reasoning is not crisp.

The quantitative section topics include Algebra (including Quadratic Equations), Percentages, Fractions and Decimals, Ratio and Proportions, Area and Volume (2 and 3 dimensional figures included), Probability, Geometry (include Coordinate Geometry), Number Systems and the like.

The GRE tests are held throughout the year. You can opt for your own date. September to December is the peak season for GRE. If you intend to give the exam during this time, register at least 90 days in advance.

You may make GRE registrations online, over the phone/fax and through a mail or courier. In case you are registering by mail, then send completed forms and draft (to appropriate regional registration center) at least three weeks in advance of your first choice date. Confirmation number and details would be either faxed or mailed to you. If you do not receive the details, intimate the regional registration center at least 3 business days before your scheduled test.

The fees for GRE is $170 (excluding taxes) to be paid at the time of registration. Other fees such as rescheduling ($50) or late registration ($25) etc. are separate. You may pay through a globally accepted credit card (Visa, Master, Amex. Discover or JCB) or money order/voucher/certified checks. Checks etc. must be in the name of ETS-GRE. It must have a preprinted check number, payee’s name and address and must not be over 90 days old.

ETS reports your scores to four universities of your choice (cost included in the fees) and any additional university costs $15 each(maximum 8). You must name these universities before leaving the test center (after the exam). You can view the unofficial quantitative and verbal reasoning scores after the examination and decide accordingly. The official scores, including Analytical Writing scores will be mailed after 10-14 days of taking the GRE exam. You may receive the scores by phone ($12).

Any person is eligible to take the GRE exam and the scores are valid for 5 years. GRE test can be taken only once a month and a maximum of 5 times in a year. This rule applies even if you get the GRE scores canceled. Unless you have scored very low marks (due to illness or other reasons) or considerably less than your usual practice tests scores, it is advisable not to take GRE tests again.

GRE Subject test is generally required by universities for Doctoral study, supplement undergraduate records and even for Masters level programs. It tests a candidate’s qualification for a specif field of specialization. The test may be taken for 8 different subjects- Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry/Cell and Molecular Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Computer Science and English Literature.

Unlike the GRE General test, the GRE Subject is a written exam and held thrice a year in October, November and April.
